There is something incredibly special about photographing a Bat Mitzvah. It is a celebration of so much more than one day—it brings together family, tradition, friendship, and a milestone that deserves to be remembered in its entirety.
Hailey’s celebration was filled with color from the moment guests arrived. Layers of soft pink, lavender, peach and blue florals transformed the space, creating the perfect setting for both the meaningful moments of the day and the celebration that followed.
But beautiful décor is only one part of the story.
For me, photographing a Bat Mitzvah begins with making sure the family can actually enjoy it.
Before the celebration, I help organize the photography around the people and moments that matter most—from portraits with parents, siblings and grandparents to the details the family spent months planning. Having that preparation in place means we can create beautiful portraits efficiently without keeping everyone away from their guests for too long.
Once the party begins, my approach changes. I want the family to forget about the camera.
The hugs. The reactions. Friends crowding onto the dance floor. The hora. Parents watching from across the room. The wonderfully unpredictable moments that no shot list could ever create.
After photographing celebrations like these for many years, I’ve learned when to give a little direction and, equally important, when to step back and allow something real to happen.
The result is a gallery that doesn’t simply show what the room looked like—it brings back what the celebration felt like.
From Hailey’s beautiful portraits surrounded by flowers to being lifted above a packed dance floor later that evening, every part of her day became another piece of the story.
And that is always my goal: to give families beautiful photographs without making photography feel like another thing they need to manage.
